AVP/VP Underwriting Governance- Westfield Specialty

Job Description:

  • Create, manage, and execute quality underwriting review strategies/plans across multiple lines of business, including external delegated underwriting authorities (MGAs).
  • Design, implement, and execute critical governance controls across all Insurance lines of specialty insurance business with a focus on Financial and Professional Lines, Commercial Property, and Excess Casualty.
  • Manage onboarding of new specialty insurance opportunities, including Delegated Arrangements (MGAs) and new business units.
  • Manage, support, and drive execution of special projects within the Specialty Insurance Segment including Compliance and Regulatory activities, product development, etc., while representing Specialty Insurance underwriting.
  • Assess, design, and deploy various strategic and tactical tools and templates to support Specialty Insurance segment goals.
  • Liaison with Internal Audit department on a regular basis.

A successful candidate will:

  • Build, maintain, and improve the underwriting governance frameworks.
  • Work closely with Westfield Specialty's Office of Corporate Underwriting colleagues, Business Unit Heads, and underwriters on implementing governance standards to strengthen the underwriting process.
  • Strike the right balance between process efficiencies and adherence to relevant underwriting standards.
  • Implement controls to assess the effectiveness of the underwriting framework and report breaches and initiate necessary remedial actions.
  • Work closely with governance, legal, compliance, and risk management functions across Westfield Specialty.
  • Stay calm, focused, and resilient in difficult times, providing business partners with clarity on a way-forward.

Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of Specialty insurance products/coverage, preferably from experience as an underwriter or claims adjuster. Market segment and marketplace: insurance, claims, and actuarial concepts; specialty underwriting quality assurance; regulatory environment and reinsurance.

  • Confirmed ability to effectively work with underwriters, and internal departments to build and maintain positive and productive relationships.
  • Recognized ability to apply underwriting/appetite, tools, systems, and resources to achieve goals, and decipher complex problems.
  • Bachelor's degree, 7+ years of specialty lines insurance experience. The title will be based on the candidate's experience.
  • Self-motivated, excellent organizational skills, strong analytical skills, ability to resolve complex problems, and a commercial mindset.
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately and thrive on the opportunity to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
