Job Description

RAMC is looking for a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team!


Schedule: Monday through Friday

Shift: Rotating 7A-3P or 9A-5P,

Hours per week: 30 hours

Weekends: As Needed


  • Position Summary:
    • The Sterile Processing Technician performs cleaning, decontamination, processing, sterilization, packaging, distributing, storing, and delivery of sterile goods, instruments, trays, and equipment. The Sterile Processing Technician will support all patient care services and be responsible for knowing all of the tools used in an operating room, clinic, and hospital departments, as well as, sterilizing and packaging instruments used during surgery.
    • The Sterile Processing Technician will also decontaminate, clean, process, assemble, store, and distribute medical devices and supplies, and keep records associated with sterilization monitors. The Sterile Processing Tech will perform appropriate documentation for the sterile processing processes. The Sterile Processing Tech will also be responsible for performing functions related to environmental cleaning of the surgical services department.
    • Flexibility in schedule is required.

  • Education and Training Required:
    • Graduation from an accredited for Sterile Processing is preferred.
    • Certification: CRCST or CSPDT within one year of hire.
    • Meets health requirements.
    • BLS certification.
  • Experience:
    • One year of experience in instrument processing is preferred.
    • Knowledge of aseptic principles is preferred.

    • Physical Demands:
      • Occasionally sits while performing tasks of the role (scheduling, developing & reviewing protocols/procedures, wrapping instruments, ordering supplies).
      • Occasionally carry objects weighing less than 25 pounds.
      • Frequently walk and stand.
      • Occasionally bend to the floor, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach overhead to retrieve equipment and/or supplies.
      • Frequently handle objects, smell, feel, control knobs, switches, and levers.
      • Frequently stand in the same position for an extended period of time.
      • Frequently twist i.e. while scrubbed in holding retractors and other instruments.
      • Frequent walking is required.
      • Frequently reach above the waist.
      • Frequently lift up to 25 pounds, above head, i.e. instrument pans.
      • Occasionally push up to 100 pounds.
      • Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds while assisting nursing staff with transferring and positioning patients and maneuvering equipment while using transfer assistance devices.
      • Frequently bend to the floor, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach overhead when cleaning surgery suites.
      • Occasionally handle objects, smell, feel, control knobs, switches, and levers.
      • Frequently carry objects weighing 10 pounds or less.
    • Sight:
      • Occasionally use sight capacities, including spatial, peripheral, colors & accommodation & depth perception.
      • Frequently use near and far vision while reviewing computer screens, and gauges on equipment.
    • Cognition/Communication:
      • Frequently utilize simple reading skills, and normal conversations.
      • Occasional exposure to comprehensive speech, both simple and complex writing skills, basic and complex math, and basic computer skills.
      • Frequently exposed to the low volume of speech with conversations with other members of the healthcare team.
    • Environmental Conditions:
      • Continual exposure to an inside, patient environment with occasional unpleasant odors or noises.
      • Frequent exposure to low light or glare conditions.
      • Continual exposure to odors from cleaning agents.
      • Occasional exposure to needles, syringes/sharps during the cleaning process of surgery suites.
    • Potential Hazards:
      • Frequent exposure to infectious blood/body fluids and diseases requiring infection control practices, red infectious waste.
      • Frequent exposure to cleaning agents, Cidex, Formalin.
      • Frequent potential for burns due to high heat from sterilizers and autoclaves.
      • Continuously exposed to needles/syringes/sharps, waste handling (general trash), and red infectious waste.
      • Frequently exposed to toxic/caustic chemical hazards and hazardous waste.
    • Psychological, Situational, and Functional Factors:
      • Ability to work overtime.
      • Frequently able to work independently and take direction from Processing Coordinator.
      • Frequently prioritize workflow while maintaining speed, accuracy, and consistency with the change of surgery schedule, emergency cases, or urgent clinic/hospital needs.
      • Able to work independently, take initiative, work closely with others, and plan cleaning schedules around surgery cases.
      • Other delegated duties.
