Job Description

Our Laboratory is looking for a full-time Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician to join the team!


Schedule: Sunday through Thursday (9:45 p.m. - 5:45 a.m.)

Hours per week: 40

  • Position Summary:
    • The MT/MLT collects and receives specimens and performs all necessary testing of blood or body fluids to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment processes. The MT/MLT ensures the quality and accuracy of all processes involved in obtaining diagnostic results.
  • Job Relationships:
    • Reports to Director of Laboratory.
  • Primary Customer Served:
    • Neonatal (0 - 30 days)
    • Infant (31 days - 1 year)
    • Pediatric (1 - 12 years)
    • Adolescent (13 - 18 years)
    • Adult (19 - 65 years)
    • Geriatric (> 66 years)
  • Education and Training Required:
    • Graduate of an accredited school with an associate's degree in Medical Technology (including internship).
    • Must have passed ASCP, AMT, AAB, or NCA certification exam or be eligible.
    • The exam must be successfully taken within 6 months of hire.
    • An alternate route involves the associate degree as an MLT with five (5) years of experience in a pathologist directed laboratory, and successful completion of the AMT Medical Technologist certification exam or armed services associate degree from an accredited junior college (including internship), ISCLT or AAB, and HEW certified as an M.T.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with the public helpful; lab experience including phlebotomy helpful, but not required.

  • Physical Requirements:
    • Physical Demands:
      • Frequently stand and walk.
      • Frequently lift/carry up to 25 pounds, while carrying a drawing tray or handling lab supplies.
      • Occasionally push and pull with up to 25 pounds of force for transporting patients in wheelchairs and moving equipment.
      • Occasionally bends to knees to draw patients.
      • Frequently uses the sense of touch to determine the adequacy of the site for venipuncture.
      • Continuously involved in the use of levers, knobs, switches, and other manipulations.
    • Sight:
      • Frequent use of near and farsighted visual acuity for reading orders, computer screens, thermometers, and observing the patient activity.
      • CANNOT BE COLOR BLIND.
    • Cognition/Communication:
      • Frequently and effectively communicate with physicians, patients, family members, and other staff members using hearing skills, comprehensive speech, simple writing, simple and complex reading, and math skills.
      • Frequent clear speech and hearing skills to communicate with patients and coworkers, either directly or via the telephone.
    • Environmental Conditions:
      • A constant indoor, patient environment with the occasional presence of fumes or unpleasant odors.
    • Potential Hazards:
      • OSHA Blood Borne/TB Classification Class I - Occupational exposure to blood and Other Potentially Infectious Material (OPIMs) is reasonably expected to occur in routine performance duties.
      • Frequent exposure to needles, syringes, and sharps during specimen collection.
      • Occasional exposure to chemical compounds utilized in specimen preservation or testing.
      • Frequent exposure to moving instrumentation parts.
      • Occasional exposure to potentially dangerous patient situations.
    • Psychological, Situational, Functional Factors:
      • Frequent problem solving, analyzing, and use of judgment in analyzing specimens, interpreting orders, resolving discrepancies, and dealing with the unanticipated.
      • Occasional management of conflict and difficult situation resolution.
      • Continuously fast, accurate, and reliable work performed with high attention to detail.
      • Frequent flexibility as it relates to shifts, duties, and personalities.
