Company Overview
Virent, Inc. is developing fuel and chemical production technologies based on the Aqueous Phase Reforming (APR) pathway, a unique and innovative route to biofuel and bioproduct production co-invented by Virent's founder.

Virent, Inc.'s patented BioFormingTM technology platform enables the economical and energy efficient use of plant based sugars to generate liquid fuels, fuel gases, and chemicals. These hydrocarbon products drive the world economy and are normally made from fossil fuels. By converting carbohydrates in biomass to fuels and chemicals, Virent is tapping the only plentiful source of hydrocarbons that exist on earth besides fossil fuels.

Virent’s technology platform uses all biomass-derived carbohydrates, including C5/C6 sugars in cellulose (plant cell walls) and hemicellulose (part of the protective covering around cellulose) that are difficult to ferment into ethanol. It can reliably convert these carbohydrates into a variety of end products including:
  • Liquid Fuels
  • Gasoline
  • Diesel
  • Jet Fuel
  • High value chemicals
  • Benzene, acetone, IPA, Propylene glycol, H2, etc.
  • Gaseous Fuels
  • Hydrogen
  • Hydrogen/alkane fuel gas (used in place of natural gas)
