WPPI Energy is the fifth largest electric utility in Wisconsin with annual revenues of $367 million in 2009, assets totaling $686.5 million and a portfolio of valuable transmission and power supply contract rights. In 2009, the system-wide peak demand was 963 megawatts (MW).

In 1980, 23 Wisconsin municipalities established WPPI Energy as the state's first municipal electic company. Membership reached 30 in 1989 when WPPI Energy bought into its first power plant. Twenty-one customer-owned utilities have joined since 2001 - including seven in Michigan and three in Iowa - bringing the total number of member communities to 51 in the three-state region.

WPPI adheres to the principles of public power, including local ownership, local control and commitment to customers and community. As public power utilities, WPPI Energy members operate on a nonprofit basis and invest all their assets in their respective local communities, making them better places to live and work.

As a joint action agency, WPPI Energy brings member communities together to make joint power purchases and share owned generation resources. Joint action also provides members with access to other shared resources, including new programs and services for customers, information technology, advocacy in legislative and regulatory affairs, and more. By working together, WPPI Energy members are better equipped to operate successfully in a rapidly changing industry.
